I hate to admit it, but I think Inception will finally relinquish the top spot at the box office this weekend. Up against a couple of wide openers entering its fourth weekend, I think the space at the top has finally become too crowed for Inception to hold on.
I am predicting The Other Guys will land at the top of the list this weekend with a gross of $23 million to $28 million. You just can’t bet against Will Ferrell, and with Mark Wahlberg, Samuel L. Jackson, Eva Mendes and Dwayne Johnson also starring, I suspect this buddy comedy will be a solid bet.
Trailing hot on the heels should be Inception. Although Step Up 3D is tracking well, I think audiences are tired of the 3D gimmick. We’ll see how it plays out, but I’m predicting that Inception will hang tough with a second place finish and a weekend take in the range of $16M to $18M.
The third film in the popular dance series Step Up should land third this weekend. I think it will be close between this movie and Inception, but I’m guessing a take of $15M – $17M. There’s another film opening this weekend called Middle Men, but I don’t think it will play too well. The material might be appealing to some (mostly guys as it deals with online porn), but there’s too much competition for the target demographic of Middle Men. Let’s not forget Salt and Dinner for Schmuck’s are still going strong.
Anyway, there you have my top three for the weekend: The Other Guys, Inception, and Step Up 3D.
