He’s certainly proved his acting chops, and now Jeremy Renner (The Hurt Locker) will get a shot opposite Tom Cruise in Mission: Impossible 4. Renner has been chosen to tackle the role of an operative who may eventually shoulder the franchise on his own.
Because, you know…Ethan Hunt (Cruise) may eventually want to retire or something.
Renner is an excellent choice for this role – but who knows whether this will turn out to be a decent film. There are some pretty solid names attached to the project.
Brad Bird is slated to direct the fourth installment of impossible missions. This seems like a bit of a strange choice as Bird has made his name (and earned his Oscars!) in animated family films like The Incredibles and Ratatouille. Not to mention he spent nine years working on The Simpsons. But perhaps the studio knows a little bit more about the movie business than I do.
Alongside Cruise in the producer role is JJ Abrams. Abrams has more of a pedigree for this sort of stuff (than Bird) and actually wrote the story for M:I 4.
Production is expected to begin this fall, and beyond that, not a whole lot is known. We’ll keep you posted as we learn more, but for the time being, we have to be satisfied knowing that Renner has been chosen (and it seems like a solid choice!). Look for Renner next in The Town, opposite Ben Affleck on September 17.
