Live Action Little Mermaid Movie in the Works

Wait…what?! THR is reporting that a live-action version of Disney’s The Little Mermaid is being developed. Director Joe Wright (Atonement, Pride and Prejudice) is apparently tackling the project with Working Title Films and the script is being written by Abi Morgan (Brick Lane).

Although the original story, written by Hans Christian Andersen’ in 1837, has been adapted numerous times in theater and in animated films, this would be the first time a live version of the film has ever been created. I guess they decided the CG technology was good enough to make a decent mermaid. After watching Beowulf and that terrible CG blending effort, I’m not so sure. I really hope they don’t screw up this timeless children’s film.

What do you think? Good idea to make this live action? Who would make a good Ariel? Scarlett Johannson has the hair color, but might be a little top heavy for a seashell bra. Any ideas? Share them in the comments below.
