Disney is set to make a live-action romantic comedy about Tinkerbell – yes, the cute little fairy in the green dress – and now we know that it’s Elizabeth Banks who will play the part. Variety reports that Banks, who actually helped develop the project is joining the team that Adam Shankman, Jennifer Gibgot and McG are producing. The film will center on Banks’ who “plays with the mischievous nature of the Tinkerbell character.”
Banks is definitely capable of capturing the pixie-cute and energetic tink, but can Shankman, Gibgot and McG steer this thing towards quality? There’s no word yet on the director, but Shankman’s body of work includes Cheaper by the Dozen 2 and Step Up 3-D. Yikes. McG, for his part, has The O.C. and Chuck under his belt – but he’s also done shows like Sorority Fever and Pussycat Dolls Present: Girlicious.
This is the second Disney movie that I’ve heard about being made into live-action in as many weeks. Just last week we heard news about The Little Mermaid receiving a life-action treatment and now we’ve got this. What else are they going to do? The Lion King might be a little hard to pull off, but Aladdin could work. How about Beauty and the Beast? Or Pocahon…oh wait. Avatar.
While I’m not necessarily discounting the new Tinkerbell just yet, I remain skeptical. Let’s find out who will direct this and we’ll get back to you. And yes, yes, I know about Alice in Wonderland and Robin Hood…those have worked out okay. But Tinkerbell? Really?!
