At this point in his career, M. Night Shyamalan is a bit of a joke. He started out so strongly with The Sixth Sense and Unbreakable, but since then it’s basically been downhill. Most recently was The Last Airbender which received embarrassingly terrible reviews (although it did surprise a little bit at the box office and should make back its budget).
Today a teaser trailer for Shyamalan’s next project hit the web – this one called Devil. And you know what? It actually looks like of good! But there’s a catch: Shyamalan isn’t directing the film. He wrote the story, and his production company is producing, but he isn’t actually behind the camera this time. And the might be a good thing.
This time around we have brothers Drew and John Erick Dowdle directing. John directed 2008’s Quarantine and his brother produced and helped write the screenplay. While Quarantine wasn’t quite the small budget horror success as Paranormal Activity, it was a decent enough film for the genre.
With Devil, it appears like we might get the better of two worlds: one where Shyamalan uses his clever and creative mind to draft a story and another world where someone else directs the film. Could Devil be Shyamalan’s chance for a career redemption? The film hits theaters September 17th. Watch the trailer and leave your thoughts in the comments below.
